Note for Visiting Japan

Entry & Documents

Passport: Must be valid for more than 6 months from the duration of the stay.

Visa: US Citizens do not need a visa for tourism (for stays up to 90 days).

Visit Japan Web: It is highly recommended to pre-register immigration and customs forms online 14 days to 6

hours before departure at the official Visit Japan Web site to generate QR codes for faster entry.

Passengers Arrival: there are 2 airports in Tokyo, Narita Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND). Please let us

know which airport you arrive in order to arrange the pickup.

Passenger Departure: suggest to depart at Kansai Airport (KIX) in Osaka. Airport transfer will be provided.

Money & Payments

Credit Cards: Widely accepted in hotels, department stores, and major restaurants. However, small shrines,

local ramen shops, and older boutiques may be cash only.

ATMs: Look for 7-Eleven (7-Bank) or Japan Post ATMs. These are the most reliable for US-issued cards and offer

English menus.

Currency Exchange: Can do the exchange at Tokyo airports upon arrival, or use ATMs.

IC Cards (Suica / Pasmo): Essential. These are “tap-to-pay” cards for trains and vending machines. Tip: iPhone

users can add a Suica card directly to their Apple Wallet.

Tax-Free Shopping

Spending: over JPY5000 can do the tax refund, just simply show your passport to the staff and they will guide

you.

Weather (May to June)

May: Expect mild, sunny days with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 24°C (60°F – 75°F). It is arguably the best

month for walking outdoors.

June: Humidity rises and the rainy season begins (usually mid-June). Temperatures climb to 20°C – 27°C (68°F –

81°F). It doesn’t rain every day, but when it does, it can be a steady drizzle or sudden humid downpours.

Suggested Clothes & Packing

Breathable Fabrics: Prioritize cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking tech fabrics (like Uniqlo’s Airism). Avoid heavy

denim, which stays damp and feels sticky in the humidity.

The “Light Layer”: Even in June, the air conditioning in trains and department stores can be “arctic.” Carry a light

cardigan or a linen button-down to throw on indoors.

Rain Readiness: You don’t need to pack a heavy raincoat. Most locals use high-quality umbrellas. You can buy a

sturdy, clear plastic umbrella at any 7-Eleven or FamilyMart for about 800 yen—it’s practically a Japanese travel

rite of passage.

Socks Matter: Since you’ll be removing your shoes at temples and some restaurants, ensure your socks are clean

and hole-free!

Eating Habits & Etiquette

Tipping: Do not tip. It is not expected and can actually be seen as confusing or slightly rude. Exceptional service

is included in the price.

Walking and Eating: Generally frowned upon. If you buy street food, stand near the stall to finish it before

moving on.

Trash: Public trash cans are rare. Be prepared to carry your litter with you until you return to your hotel or find a

convenience store.

Culture & Social Norms

Silence is Golden: Keep phone calls and loud conversations off the trains and buses.

Escalator Etiquette: Just follow the person in front of you! As different city have different rule.

Bow vs. Shake: A slight nod or bow is the standard greeting.

Local Transportation

Google Maps: Extremely accurate for train platforms, departure time and exit numbers. Use it religiously.

Train: JR and Metro are all connected throughout the city.

Taxis: Expensive but pristine. The back doors open and close automatically—don’t try to pull them shut yourself!
